 "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?"

″These words, cried with a loud voice in the extreme agony of soul, marked the climax and the end of this suffering of Christ, the withdrawal of God, and the felt loneliness of the Sufferer.  Not only nature entered three hours' darkness; Jesus also entered into darkness: body, soul, and spirit.  Into this fathomless depth of the mystery of His sufferings, we dare not, as indeed we cannot, enter.  Yet the sacrificial, vicarious, expiatory, and redemptive character of His Death helps us to understand Christ's sense of God-forsakenness in the supreme moment of the cross.  He died as the accursed representative sacrifice for man″.

 «Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato?»

″Tali parole, urlate a gran voce in un momento di angoscia mortale dell'anima, segnano il culmine e la fine della passione di Cristo, l'allontanamento di Dio e la solitudine sperimentata dal Sofferente. Non fu soltanto la natura a vivere tre ore di tenebre, ma Gesù stesso ne fu avviluppato, corpo, anima e spirito. In questo insondabile abisso del mistero delle sue sofferenze, non ardiamo, né d'altronde potremmo, inoltrarci. Malgrado ciò il carattere sacrificale, vicario, espiatorio e redentivo della sua morte ci aiuta in qualche modo a comprendere la misura in cui Cristo dovette assaporare il totale abbandono da parte del Padre, nel momento supremo del martirio. Egli si immolò quale esecrabile sacrificio al posto dell'uomo".
