To young preachers

″3d. I not only advise you to preach the Word, but also preach it in the spirit. In vain we attempt to preach in the spirit, unless we have the spirit, and experience the force of that truth we deliver to others. A man may preach the truth in the letter without the spirit. Such preaching is vain--useless to saint and sinner. Apathetic and moral lectures on religion have almost ruined the world, and swelled the number of sceptics. For they thus argue: Did these people believe what they preach or read, would they be so cold and unfeeling in their addresses? Would they not cry aloud and spare not? Did you ever know one such preacher convert a sinner from the error of his ways? A person may also preach with a great vociferous zeal and manner. This may be and often is nothing more than mere animal nature, without the spirit. Live and walk in the spirit, and preach in the spirit; then will the attention of your hearers be arrested, and good effects will follow.

      When we see our neighbor's house in flames, and the unconscious family within exposed to instant death, we do not take time to study and write an eloquent speech in order to read it to them, that they may fly from impending ruin--nor do we write a speech to read to persons whom we see ready to rush down a deathly precipice, unconscious of their danger. No; were we to do so, those people would be apt to disregard our admonitions, and perish″.

Terzo consiglio

″E non solo vi consiglio di predicare la Parola, ma di predicarla nello spirito. Vano sarà il nostro predicare nello spirito, se non abbiamo lo Spirito e non sperimentiamo personalmente la forza di quanto andiamo dicendo agli altri. Si può predicare la verità nella lettera senza lo spirito. Tale predicazione è infruttuosa, inutile sia per i santi che per i peccatori. I passivi addottrinamenti morali sulla religione hanno quasi rovinato il mondo e accresciuto il numero degli increduli. Infatti, li sentiamo ragionare: se questi credessero in ciò che predicano e leggono, sarebbero così indifferenti e distaccati nelle loro argomentazioni? Non farebbero a meno di gridare così ad alta voce? Avete mai conosciuto un predicatore che abbia convertito un peccatore agendo così? Un uomo può anche predicare con parole e modi altisonanti. Quando ciò accade, spesso è semplicemente l'emergere della nostra natura carnale, che è priva dello Spirito. Vivete, camminate e predicate nello Spirito e catturerete l'attenzione dei vostri ascoltatori, riscuotendo risultati alla gloria di Dio. Se la casa di un nostro vicino è avvolta dalle fiamme e i suoi ignari abitanti sono in pericolo di morte, noi non perdiamo tempo a studiare e a scrivere un eloquente discorso per poterglielo leggere, in modo che comprendano di dover fuggire dall'imminente disastro. Né compiliamo un discorso da leggere a persone che corrono verso un precipizio, ignari del pericolo a cui vanno incontro. No. Se lo facessimo, quelli  quasi certamente ignorerebbero le nostre esortazioni e perirebbero″.
