Do not contract many worldly acquaintances.

Learn to be abused without becoming angry.

Do not meddle much with the affairs of this life.

Argue coolly, and from conscience - not for victory.

Do not pretend a 'show of sanctimony' before men.

Do not be ashamed of piety in any company.

Whatever else you read, read a double portion in the scriptures of truth.

Shun familiarity with the men of the world-else celestial truths, as
uttered by you, will be despised.

Do not be much concerned about your own reputation - as long as
the truth and the gospel do not suffer.

Learn daily more of Christ and more of yourself-else your other
studies will profit little.

Seek not great things for yourself. Seek not great fame, great
applause, great comforts, or a great income. But seek great things
for Christ. Seek for him great glory, many converts, and much fruits
of righteousness.

Consider the preciousness of souls, the value of salvation, the
weight of the sacred charge, the terrors of the Almighty, the solemn
day of judgment, and your own utter inability. Then shall you have
no vain confidence, but depend on God alone.

Please all men so long as you are consistent with the truth - but
do not wound the truth to please any.

Set your affections on things above - so shall spiritual things be
your delight, and not your burden.

In company, always study to say something for edification. In this
way, you preach every day - as well as on Sundays. Be much with
God in secret - so shall God be with you in public.

See that the behavior of every person in your family is a pattern to
all observers; and not matter of reproach - to the joy of God's enemies.

Let your flock be continually on your mind. And not only pray with
them in public, and from house to house - but carry them to your
closet, and pray for them in private.

Do not neglect to visit them at all proper times, but especially
embrace those golden opportunities - sickness and affliction.

Have sympathetic feelings with the sufferings of all your flock.

Let your life be consistent with your message. What you preach
on Sunday - practice through the week.

Do not only press charity on the wealthy; but let your example,
according to your ability, show the way.

Lend your ear to reproaches - rather than applauses. Reproaches
may let us see some of our foibles or failings. But commendation
is very apt to kindle self-conceit - of which everyone has enough.

Be temperate in eating and drinking. Do not, when at a feast,
though temperate at other times - be a glutton or a wine-bibber.

With respect to your flock, consider that you are made the steward
of a family, and therefore must, seeing the great Master allows it -
provide food for all - meat for the strong, and milk for the weak.

Keep an exact list or catalogue of your flock-who is pious or
profligate; who is in affluence or poverty; who is in health or sick -
and read it often.

Give a pleasant ear when others are commended. But always
frown away the friend that would commend you to your face.

Be scant in exhibiting 'specimens of your learning', or comments
on the Scriptures in their original languages. For a fine grammarian
may be but a novice in piety and the gospel.

In preaching, aim at God's glory and the good of souls. And then,
without deviating from that rule - please all men as much as possible.

Let your sermons be always the fruit of much study and application.
And never dare to serve God or his people with that which cost you nothing

• Non stringete troppe amicizie mondane
• Imparate a essere calunniati senza irritarvi
• Non immischiatevi troppo negli affari di questa vita
• Discutete con calma e con coscienza, non per il gusto di imporre le vostre vedute
• Non simulate un'affettazione ipocrita di santità e di virtù morali agli occhi degli uomini
• Non vergognatevi di mostrare misericordia, in qualunque rapporto umano
• Qualunque altra cosa leggiate, dopo leggete una doppia porzione di Scritture
• Evitate di socializzare con la gente del mondo, altrimenti le verità celesti da voi affermate verranno disprezzate
• Non curatevi eccessivamente della vostra reputazione, fintantoché la verità e il vangelo non ne soffrono danno
• Accrescete quotidianamente la vostra conoscenza di Cristo e di voi stessi, altrimenti gli altri vostri studi saranno poco proficui
• Non cercate grandi cose per voi stessi. Non inseguite la popolarità, il plauso degli uomini, le comodità o i grandi guadagni. Cercate piuttosto grandi cose per Cristo. Desiderate che gli venga data maggior gloria, che si convertano a Lui molte anime e che portiate molti frutti di giustizia
• Riflettete sul grande valore delle anime, sulla preziosità della salvezza, sulla responsabilità del vostro sacro incarico, sui terrori dell'Onnipotente, sul solenne giorno del Giudizio e sulla vostra totale incapacità, dopodiché sarete privi di vana fiducia in voi stessi e dipenderete soltanto da Dio
• Assecondate pure gli uomini, finché rimarrete coerenti con la verità, ma non fate violenza alla verità per assecondare alcuno
• Ponete i vostri affetti nelle cose di sopra, in modo che le realtà spirituali diventino il vostro diletto, non il vostro fardello
• Quando siete con gli altri, studiatevi di dire qualcosa che edifichi. Predicate secondo questo schema ogni giorno, comprese le domeniche. State molto con Dio in segreto, in modo che Egli sia con voi in pubblico
• Fate in modo che il comportamento di ogni membro della vostra famiglia sia di esempio per quelli vi osservano e non occasione di richiamo, facendo godere i nemici di Dio
• Pensate continuamente al vostro gregge. E non pregate solo in pubblico o di casa in casa con loro, ma portateli nella vostra cameretta e pregate per loro in privato
• Non dimenticate di visitare i fedeli in ogni circostanza, ma approfittate specialmente delle opportunità per eccellenza, vale a dire la malattia e l'afflizione
• Mostrate solidarietà a quelli del vostro gregge che soffrono
• La vostra vita rifletta il messaggio che annunciate. Quello che predicate la domenica, mettetelo in pratica durante la settimana
• Non costringete soltanto il ricco a essere caritatevole, ma fate in modo che il vostro esempio, secondo la vostra disponibilità, indichi la giusta strada
• Prestate orecchio alle lamentele, più che alle approvazioni. I rimproveri possono farci notare le nostre debolezze e le nostre mancanze, mentre la lode si presta a stuzzicare la superbia, della quale tutti ne abbiamo a sufficienza
• Siate moderati nel mangiare e nel bere. Non siate ingordi o beoni durante una ricorrenza, mentre abitualmente siete temperati
• Ricordate sempre che, nei confronti del gregge che pasturate, foste fatti amministratori di una famiglia e perciò, imitando il grande Maestro, dovete provvedere il nutrimento per tutti, cibo consistente per il forte e latte per il debole
• Fatevi un registro dei membri del vostro gregge, annotandovi chi è devoto e chi lo è meno, chi è in ricchezza e chi è nella povertà, chi è in salute e chi è malato, e leggetelo spesso
• Ascoltate interessati quando qualcuno viene elogiato, ma mostratevi severi con chi vuole lodarvi in vostra presenza
• Siate sempre misurati nell'esibire 'i capolavori del vostro studio' o le spiegazioni sulle Scritture nelle lingue originali. Un fine erudito può essere un principiante nella pietà e nella conoscenza del vangelo
• Quando predicate, abbiate come scopo la gloria di Dio e il bene delle anime. E poi, senza allontanarvi da tale principio, per quanto possibile accontentate tutti gli uomini
• I vostri sermoni siano frutto di molto studio e applicazione. E non osate mai servire Dio o il suo popolo con quello che non vi costa nulla
